As a motorist, you should have the basic knowledge required to inspect hoses and belts in your car. Use a flashlight for visual inspections of belts and hoses to help see all the details.

Belts

Your vehicle has a drive belt that powers components like the alternator, power steering pump, air conditioner and water pump.

Some vehicles have a timing belt that connects the driveshaft with the camshaft, but higher-end engines use a timing chain that doesn't require regular service.

Hoses

Hoses carry air and liquids through the engine. Without hoses, the engine would not be able to cycle liquids like oil, coolant, power steering fluid, brake fluid, etc., and turbos would not be able to cycle air without the use of rubber hoses. 

That's why it's important to educate yourself on proper inspection of the specific hoses and belts that your vehicle has.
